offered in conjunction with The Colorado Family Therapy Institute Addiction
Counseling: Art Therapy with Addicted Clients Research has shown that Art
Therapy is an effective treatment for addiction clients as an adjunct to "talk
Therapy". A narrative approach alone does not always address clinical issues
like guilt, shame, and family of origin issues. This class will help students
develop an integrative approach to work with addiction clients Addiction
Counseling: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy with Addiction Clients
Cognitive-behavioral interventions are recognized by the Center for Substance
Abuse Treatment as a best practice in the treatment of addictive behavior disorders.
Participants in the two-day class will learn to apply key components of the cognitive-behavioral
model including the impact of the client's belief system. Addiction
Counseling: Culturally Competent Substance Abuse Treatment
This class helps the students to understand the practice of substance abuse
therapy with culturally diverse clients and to Identify the major approaches
to ethnocultural substance abuse therapy; as well as identify person of counselor
issues and how they relate to addiction counseling . Addiction
Counseling: Diversity in Treatment Populations This focus
of this class is on understanding the cross cultural issues inherent in the practice
of addiction counseling. The class Reviews the research based approaches to cross
cultural addiction counseling and understanding the process of clinical
skills in the practice of addiction counseling. Domestic
Violence: Victim Impact In this class students learn to understand the impact
of domestic violence on: Children, Partners, Sexual abuse victims, and Addiction
treatment. Student will also be able to Apply clinical skills in domestic violence
treatment and addiction counseling with clients. Addiction
Counseling: Group Counseling Skills with Addiction Clients In this course
you will understand the application of Group Counseling in addiction
counseling; review the research about Group Counseling in addiction
counseling and understand how to use the Stages of Change in Motivational
Interviewing in Group Counseling to treat addiction clients. Addiction
Counseling: Infectious Diseases in Addiction Treatment Settings
IN this class you will understand the impact of infectious diseases on addiction
counseling clients and Review the range of diseases that addiction counseling
clients are at risk for. You will also understand the role of preventive education
in the practice of addiction counseling. Addiction
Counseling: Pharmacology One and Two
In These two courses you will receive an overview of the physiological
functioning of the human anatomy, with special emphasis on the brain and central
nervous system. We will discuss the impact of psychoactive substances –
specifically CNS depressants – physiologically and psychologically. Substances
discussed will include sedative hypnotics (alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines,
sleeping aids), narcotics, inhalants and some abused prescription meds. Each of
these courses meets the 14 hour Pharmacology I and II training requirement for
those seeking CAC II certification. Addiction Counseling:
Professional Ethics in Clinical Settings This course is designed to increase
students' awareness of ethical issues, assist students with developing problem
solving skills around ethical dilemmas, and clarify counselor' values with respect
to psychotherapy services. Addiction Counseling:
Tobacco Dependence Treatment This course teaches the understanding
of substance abuse therapy with tobacco dependent clients. We Identify the major
approaches to research- based treatment of tobacco dependence and relate best
practices of tobacco dependence treatment to the clinical practice of addiction
counselors . Addiction Counseling: Motivational Interviewing Motivational
interviewing is a style of working with clients, which is designed to increase
their personal motivation to change non-productive behaviors. This workshop will
teach counselors to match interventions to six stages of readiness-for-change.
GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER CLIENTS
This one day class reviews the major client types in addiction counseling,
differential assessment, and treatment of clients with a dual diagnosis or dual
disorder. Subjects to be covered include assessment, identification, integrative
treatment, and the DSM IV Addiction Counseling: Family Systems Addiction
not only impacts the individual client, but relationships with partners, spouses,
and family members. Research has shown addiction issues often originate in the
family of origin of client, yet addiction counselors (and other mental health
professional) are not trained to be aware of family systems dynamics. The two
day elective class reviews major models of family therapy and interventions for
couple and family therapy with addiction clients and concerned significant others. Domestic
Violence: Sociocultural and Sociopolitical Issues This class teaches you
to understand how the following relate to Domestic Violence: Legal Issues, Community
Resources, Sociocultural Issues, Gender Issues, Diverse Populations; and Addiction
Addiction Counseling: Differential Assessment and
Treatment Treatment outcomes can be improved by learning
to apply the principles of a differential assessment model of treatment. Students
will learn to describe differences among client types and how to individualize
treatment plans ad interventions. Addiction Counseling:
Court Testimony for Addiction Counseling This one day elective course enhances
the student's ability to provide accurate, appropriate, and less risky testimony
in court as an expert witness. Addiction counselors and mental health professionals
are subpoenaed in civil and criminal cases including child custody, parental rights
termination, and divorce hearings. It is essential in today's climate to learn
how to avoid grievance, sanction, or lawsuits for inappropriate court testimony
and prevent impeachment of testimony. This class will focus on court testimony
skills, responding appropriately to subpoenas, and counselor risk management in
dealing with the Colorado Court System Addiction Counseling:
Clinical Supervision of Addiction Counselors this
class teaches the different models of clinical supervision for addiction
clients; as well as review the leadership and developmental aspects of clinical
supervision of addiction counselors and understand the ethical, legal, and professional
issues inherent in the clinical supervision of addiction counselors;
including DORA Rules. SAND PLAY THERAPY This class
is an introduction to using Sand play Therapy, and other Jungian ideas, as a clinical
approach for the assessment and treatment of addiction clients and their family
members. The influence of Carl G. Jung on the creation of AA and addiction counseling
will be discussed in this class |
